Canadian lottery odds, as the lotteries publish them.

The odds of every prize tier for 17 Canadian draw games, copied from each operator’s own page or rules, with a link to the source. Below them, the arithmetic for more than one play: the chance rises only as fast as the cost does.

Sources read October 28, 2026.

1 to 100,000

One Lotto Max play is $6: four selections of seven numbers from 1 to 52. Published top-prize odds: 1 in 33,446,140 per play (Main jackpot of at least $10 million (up to $90 million)).

Cost: 1 × $6 = $6.

Chance that one of them wins the top prize, all in the same draw: 1 × 1/33,446,140 = 1 in 33,446,140 (0.00000299%, about 1 in 33,446,140). The chance that none of them does: 33,446,139 in 33,446,140.

This holds only when every selection is different: a repeated selection in the same draw adds no new chance. Twice the plays is twice the chance and twice the cost; the chance per dollar stays the same.

What the odds mean

  • Every draw is independent. No number choice, pattern or strategy changes the odds: every combination has the same chance in every draw, whether you pick it or a terminal does, and whether it was drawn last week or never.
  • More plays raise the chance only in proportion to the plays bought, and the cost rises in the same proportion. Ten different Lotto 6/49 plays in one draw are 10 chances in 13,983,816, for ten times the price.
  • The expected return is below the ticket price. Lotteries pay out less in prizes than they take in sales: Lotto Max: “The fixed prizes for 3 of 7, 3 of 7+Bonus and 4 of 7 are payable from the Prize Fund (a minimum of 48% of sales).”; Lotto 6/49: “Prize Fund: 18.33% of cash sales + $0.55 per free play redeemed … Draw Fund: 29.67% of cash sales + $0.89 per free play redeemed.”; Daily Grand (Grande Vie in Québec): “THEORETICAL PAYOFF RATE: 49%”; MegaDice Lotto: “Overall prize payout is 59.9%.”; Québec Max: “THEORETICAL PAYOFF RATE: 47%”; Québec 49: “THEORETICAL PAYOFF RATE: 49.9%”.
  • Where a top prize is shared, the one thing your numbers can change is how many people you would share it with: many players pick calendar dates (1 to 31). That changes the size of a share, not the chance of winning.

Each table shows the odds per play. A play can be several lines: a $6 Lotto Max play is four selections of seven numbers, which is why its top-prize odds are 1 in 33,446,140 rather than one in all possible combinations.
